Anime is a term used to describe a type of animation developed in Japan at the turn of the 20th century. Like its Western counterpart, the cartoon, anime features hand-drawn or computer generated images. In Japan, anime refers to all animation while in other languages, the term defines animation from Japan or a Japanese-disseminated animation style characterized by colorful graphics, vibrant characters and fantastic themes. Anime in Japan is often an offshoot or springboard from its companion medium, manga or graphic novels (as they are known in Western culture).[1]
