Kurisu Kyoji O'Brien is an observer for the Immigration Bureau and a promoter for the Special Religious Zone.

Appearance[]

O'Brien is a male of average height and slender build in his 60's. He has brown eyes, graying brown hair and a boxed beard. He is typically seen in a gray suit, dark shirt and pants.

Personality[]

He is a kind-hearted, but stubborn individual. He is responsible and cares about others, but especially his comatose son whose recovery is far from assured.

Personal Background[]

  • He leaves his son in Theresa Shinogi's care and goes to Heaven's Leap for answers, only to be artificially afflicted with Stage 4 terminal cancer.
  • He is persuaded by Torri S. Aschenbach into using the "Final Salvation Plan" he devises with Shinogi, Joseph Auma and Motohiro Nisei to expose the bigotry in Japanese society by orchestrating a series of terrorist bombing attacks.

They do not get along due to their differing stances on the Special Religious Zone. However, Shinogi still worries about him and cares for his son.

Torri S. Aschenbach[]

Aschenbach and O'Brien have a complicated relationship. While O'Brien blames Aschenbach for what has happened to his son, he is also grateful to him for showing him what was truly important to him.

Joseph Auma[]

Auma and O'Brien are old friends. Auma helps him devise the "Final Salvation Plan."

Nisei and O'Brien are old friends. Nisei helps him devise the "Final Salvation Plan."

Trivia[]

  • He owns a pocket watch embedded with a chip with the words "Aut viam inveniam aut faciam (I shall either find a way or make one)" inscribed in it. This phrase is attributed to Hannibal Barca when his generals told him it was impossible to cross the Alps by elephant. It is a memento from a refugee protection group.
